Planning:
Guided by our Principal Madam Prof. Dr. Jasmine Joseph, VINS & RC, Bangalore and with coordinated efforts of Department Of Community Health Nursing Prof. Asha Latha .S,HOD, Prof .Veena NSS officer and Prof. Deepa a Mockdrill During Disaster training was planned. The Security Department of Vydehi Hospital Mr.Thomas Senior Security Officer and Mr.Kamal Patient Safety Officer coordinated and planned to provide the training for the BSc Nursing students. Date, time and venue was fixed.
During the training:
The training started with the explanation of various disasters, management, preparedness, measure to handle fire accidents, various types of cylinders and role of nurses was discussed. The nursing students attended the session attentively. The session also included the details about the use of emergency codes to be followed to intimate about the disaster through phone facilities available in our campus. They asked their doubts and got them cleared with Mr.Kamal Patient Safety Officer who led the discussion. The different types of cylinders use were demonstrated and return demonstration was asked to be done the students. Feedback for the session was taken. The out-door session included using the cylinders on the live fire and extinguishing it using correct method.
Outcome of the training program:
The Mockdrill training session created an awareness and sense of responsibility as a nurse and as a citizen to handle the disaster and gave students the wide idea about the management of various disasters and response during the disasters.
Conclusion:
Based on the objectives of Community Health Nursing the Nursing students involved attended the training program and showed the return demonstration when they were asked to do indoor and in outdoor setting. This helped them gain practical knowledge about the management during fire disaster and preparedness for others disasters in general.
