Program Overview:
The students were posted at both the ICDS centers on rotation and assigned with various activities to be carried out for the Preschoolers at the centers. The Nursing students enthusiastically participated in all the activities such as Under five assessment, teaching action songs, revising basic elementary education concepts such as numbers, alphabets, fruits names and vegetable names was carried out.
Faculty Involvement:
The program was guided and motivated by Dr. Jasmine Joseph, Principal, Vydehi Institute Of Nursing sciences and Research Centre, Mrs. Asha Latha.S, Prof HOD Community Health Nursing, Mrs. Veena, Prof Community Health Nursing and NSS Program Officer and Mrs. Deepa, Prof. Community Health Nursing, Ms.Anupa Nag, Lecturer and Mrs.Lekhani Nursing Tutor.
Program Overview and activities:
Each day of the posting the nursing students carried out the scheduled activities and involved in the ICDS centre objectives such as
- Improve Nutritional and Health Status
- Reduce Mortality and Morbidity
- Early Childhood Development
- Community Health Education
- Immunization and Preventative Care
- Monitoring and Surveillance
- Inter-sectoral Coordination
Students involved in the regular activities of the ICDS centre and understood the set up. The coloring books, crayons and needed items were distributed to the children by the Nursing students. The preschoolers received the items happily and teachers also conveyed their gratitude. The nursing students collected information about the ICDS centre activities, daily routine, menu plan, educational activities, ICDS center teacher’s daily schedule, responsibilities and records maintained at ICDS centre.
Outcome of the Program:
By participating in this program, BSc Nursing students were able to gain leadership skills, coordination, team building, communication skills and skills in problem solving. The posting and activities provided a framework for community health practice, focusing on growth monitoring, immunization, and nutritional education.
Conclusion:
Based on the objectives of Community Health Nursing the Nursing students involved in the program at ICDS Centre and gained practical knowledge about the function and activities and role of ICDS centre in maintenance and promotion of health in the community level.
