Organized by- Department of Community Health Nursing, NSS, PBBSC 2nd Year and GNM 3rd Year students .
A Nurse-led health camp was organized on 16th April, 10 am onwards, which began when community people started coming for free comprehensive health checkup, in the presence of students, and our faculties.
Registration counter– Registration of the attendees of health camp was done by students. Their identification data was obtained and a health assessment format was handed over to them. This assessment form was filled up by students in various counters.
Health assessment counter – A comprehensive health checkup was done in these counters. Brief health history was taken which included important factors like lifestyle, dietary pattern, past medical history etc. This was followed up by height, weight and vital signs checking, along with head to foot general examination. BMI was calculated and any deviation from normal was marked. This helped us to identify any health concerns.
Haemoglobin estimation counter– This was done using a Telequest scale, which is a simple, quick and reliable method to detect haemoglobin levels in blood. Students followed aseptic measures to collect blood and noted the values in the health assessment sheet.
Random Blood Sugar checking counter– Using a glucometer, the students checked blood sugar levels of the camp attendees. Procedure was carried out following aseptic technique and blood sugar levels were noted in assessment sheets.
Health education counter– Students gave health education on prevention of worm infestation which highlighted the importance of biannual deworming. Incidental health teaching was also provided based on any abnormalities detected during health assessment.
Distribution of medicines– ORS, Albendazole was distributed among st the attendees. They were informed regarding the importance of keeping oneself hydrated during the hot summers. Preparation of ORS was explained to them and other necessary information regarding the storage and consumption of ORS was give. The importance of biannual deworming was emphasized and instructions were given regarding how to take the medicine.
Outcome– At the end of the camp, a survey was compiled based on the findings. A total of 27 people attended the health camp. Out of them, 12 were male and 15 were female. 23 of them led an active lifestyle while 2 led sedentary and 2 led moderately active lifestyle. 7 attendees had diabetes, 5 had hypertension and 4 were found to be obese.
Appropriate health education and referrals were given to ensure proper follow-up and management.
